The area in which I live is booming in new growth, I have three teen-age sons (14-16) and am planning to begin a lawn maintenance business beginning next year, employing all three to work it while I continue in my employment. I have a good truck, a couple of weed eaters, and tools for basic maintenance. What else should I plan to purchase, how much money to initiate this plan, and what will be my most successful path to begin?

Get a team together, buy good equipment, and flyer, flyer, flyer.

  • Cristina Murphy:

Buy lawnmowers, weedwackers, and put flyers around the neighborhood. Start with neighbors and work outward of the house.

First, secure all the customers you can handle, then secure all the equipement you will need, such as atleast two lawn mowers encase one breaks, you will need a string trimmer of good quality a rake shovel , and some means to haul off the yard waste. keep an appointment book, and be promt when showing up for the job. be dependable when you tell some oneyou will be there at a certain time be there. if you can’t make it let the customer know. If you do a good job, your customers will take care of most of your advertising, by reccomending you to friends and acquaintences. Good luck on your business venture

YOU DON’T SAY BUT I GUESS YOU HAVE LAWNMOWERS, BOTH PUSH TYPE AND RIDING WITH BAGS. CONTACT YOUR LOCAL SMALL BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, THEY WILL WORK WITH YOU EVEN IF YOU DON’T BORROW FROM THEM. HIRE A CPA FOR YOUR TAXES. STAY IN YOUR GENERAL AREA AND WAIT FOR WORD OF MOUTH ADVERTIZING. ALSO CONSIDER SMALL LANDSCAPING JOBS-IT IS REALLY BIG RIGHT NOW. IN YOUR SPARE TIME LOL LEARN HOW TO USE ROCK, BRICK AND WOOD FOR DECKS ETC. THIS IS A PROFESSION YOU CAN DO WITH YOUR KIDS AND TAKE THE WINTER OFF (UNLESS YOU WANT TO DO SNOW REMOVAL) DON’T PRICE TOO CHEAP. BUT, GIVING NEIGHBORS A LITTLE OFF FOR RECOMMENDATIONS HELPS, I WAS A SEAMSTRESS FOR YEARS-MADE LOTS OF MONEY SITTING ON MY BUTT. DONNA

First of all you need to check with your local city hall to determine weather or not you will need a permit. Then depending on what you need legally you might have to incorporate yourself which could be costly but will allow you to properly file the correct tax forms and to withold taxes to have a ligit business. This would allow you to have employees on a W2 status. YOu should check into that first b/c that could be costly. Once you’ve gotten that taken care of, you’ll need to deal with liability insurance etc… You’ll need the lawnmowers, weedwackers, good transportation and also if you are going to have your employees driving these trucks with this equipment in it, they may need a commercial drivers license…may want to check into that as well. It’s gonna cost you to do it right. If you dont want to do it “right” then just through a sign on the side of your truck, the lawn mowing equipment in the back and pay them under the table!
